I'm Meredith Atwell, founder and designer at BeachBu.
I started BeachBu, because I have always suffered from sensitive skin. I was never able to wear any kind of fashion or costume jewelry because it would cause severe skin itching, swelling, discomfort and/or rashes, sometimes lasting for days on end, even after taking off the jewelry and showering. In some instances, my skin would even turn green, along with the jewelry, which would turn an unsightly greenish/black shade after just a single wear. With my love for all things fashion, I became extremely frustrated and felt defeated. Would I ever be able to find affordable fashion jewelry and accessories that I could not only wear without fear of an allergic reaction, but could wear more than one time before the plating completely wears off or metal changes colors/tarnishes? Would I only be able to wear costly fine jewelry costing $100s or even $1000s for a single piece made with solid gold or platinum?
At this time in 2009-2010, the majority of the fashion jewelry and accessories market was mass produced overseas in places like China, all made with the lowest quality gold or silver plating over some of the worst culprits for people like myself with sensitive skin, using base metal alloys of nickel, lead, or copper.
After receiving my bachelors degree at the University of Arizona, and then receiving my Associates of Arts degree at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) in downtown Los Angeles, I began my jewelry design journey. Starting out solely as a hobby, and quest to find answers to better understand my skin sensitivites and allergies, I quickly realized I was not alone. Studies suggest that up to 15% of the population could be affected and suffering from allergic reactions to metals when wearing jewelry.

Pronounced Beach-Boo
You're probably wondering about the name BeachBu, and where it originated from and how it came to be...?
In 2012, I lived in a tiny apartment on the "beach" in Malibu, California. Nicknamed the “Bu” by locals, is where BeachBu was born.

Our primary focus lies in the creation of fashion-forward designs using only top-tier metals and gemstones, ensuring not only the utmost quality but also the safety of those with sensitive skin. Our product offerings encompass both timeless classics and fashionable contemporary pieces, all of which remain affordable. Our mission is to provide high-quality fashion jewelry that transcends fleeting trends, offering longevity and enduring beauty. In our pursuit of accessible luxury, we firmly believe that exorbitant spending on fine jewelry should not be a prerequisite for durability. Discover the Old World Treasures Collection with unique, vintage jewelry findings sourced from around the globe, each with a unique history and story. The 'Old World Treasures Collection' features rare vintage findings (i.e. beads, charms, pendants, focals, etc.) from Africa, Afghanistan, Nepal, Thailand, Tibet, India, Indonesia and more. We take these vintage findings and use them as a starting point (i.e. inspiration) that we build upom to create a new, often OOAK or limited edition piece that we handcraft from beginning to end in our studio in Florida. We love finding these old world treasures and reurposing them into something modern and new
